Programme Activities

Cambridge Foodbank

Cambridge Foodbank is is a dynamic and emerging charity that collects surplus food and redistributes it to local voluntary groups. The Centre at St Paul's receives a delivery of tinned soup and vegetables, packets of cereal, bottled water and other items every THURSDAY which is distributed to the public free of charge from 10 a.m.

It's a van man thing: Arthur with the old van in which he used to make his weekly deliveries.

Sadly it has now gone to the happy hunting ground.

Cambridge Foodbank also aims to tackle issues such as recycling, landfill and social exclusion. It offers manufacturers and retailers an alternative to landfilling surplus groceries which are good quality and in-date. Food donations are collected, warehoused and re-distributed to member organisations and charities tackling poverty and social exclusion. Foodbank aims to help:

      • Homeless and ex-homeless
      • Women in refuges
      • Families on low incomes
      • Young people
      • Elderly people
      • People with learning difficulties
      • People with disabilities

Since the launch of Cambridge Foodbank in October 2001, there are now 95 agencies benefiting from the project within the county and 30 regular donors participating in the scheme. Member agencies include Jimmy’s Nightshelter, Emmaus, English Churches Housing Group, the Salvation Army, the Centre at St Paul's and East Anglian Children’s Hospices. 50 tonnes of surplus food was donated to the Foodbank within its first year and the projected total for 2006 / 07 is 100 tonnes.

Cambridge Foodbank offers donors an economic, effective and environmentally friendly alternative to dispose of unwanted or surplus products, reducing transport and disposal costs and enhancing customer and community relations.
