16 JULY: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Removal of the pews has created an amazing sense of space in an amazing space. There's a long way to go. But today we had a glimpse of what lies ahead. The sense of space at ground level beautifully complements the height and elegant lines of the hall. It immediately feels bigger. Some people fear a loss of identity. But sensitive redevelopment can only enhance St Paul's as the setting for worship services and community activities. Difficult to describe the impact of one day's work if you haven't seen it. The cherry picker is being used for cleaning purposes, to restore the Bath stone arches and columns to their original colour.
