“Congolese/Latin fusion band Grupo Lokito are touring the UK from April-June, following funding from the Arts Council of England.
Congo and Cuba are two countries famed for their wonderful Music. Grupo Lokito , formed four years ago by Latin Piano player Sara McGuinness and Congolese Singer Jose Hendrix Ndelo, brew up a exciting blend of these two great musical styles. The band features wonderful musicians from the both traditions who have chosen to make London their home. They have wowed London’s Salsa, African, Club and Festival audiences.
Now, with the aid of an Arts Council of England Grant, they have a 12 date UK tour. The tour coincides with the release of their first full Album “Esengo Ya Ko Bina” the title track of which was featured on the World Music Circuit compilation “Rough Guide to African Street Party”. The band teamed up with some Congo-based musicians to play in Kinshasa in January of this year and are due to return for a tour in the autumn.
The live show is an exuberant display of the sheer joy of this great music. The singers shift effortlessly between melodious rumba and lively salsa before the band slips seamlessly into “Seben” (coined “the dancing part of the music”) with soaring guitars and wild choreographed dance moves.
