Hanover and Princess Courts host annual event

Hardly a balmy night - we're talking about December here - but the weather was unseasonally mild. Unlike previous years, we were spared the double whammy of a torrential downpour and gale force winds howling off the fens.

The celebrations were hosted by Councillor Kevin Blencowe pictured left; the tree lights were switched on by Cambridge Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sheila Stuart. Two choirs made up of staff and pupils from St Alban's and St Paul's primary schools made a truly joyful noise with a selection of carols and Christmas songs. And Michael Beckett reminded us of the real meaning of the Christmas angels, looking beyond the rather grotesque figures hovering above the Grand Arcade.

The event was organised by residents association vice-chair Caroline Fernandez aided and abetted by Nia Evans, the new community development worker for Netwown. Thanks to them and to Cambridge City Council for the grant that made the event possible.

But what about Father Christmas aka Santa? Well he was there too - after a quick call to Mrs Claus, to check his diary. Accompanied by Olly, the wonder dog no less. He seemed grumpy at first but soon warmed to his task and thoroughly enjoyed our company as we did his.

Bit of a curmudgeon Ade - even if you are a guest! You must realise that Father Christmas spreads sweetness and light wherever he goes. I for one hope that he and Olly, the wonder dog, will be a fixture at community Christmas events for many years to come.
