LA-33 - 11th July 2008 - COLOMBIA's NUMBER ONE BAND
Whoa! If "Descarga 33" — the opening track of Gozalo — doesn't raise the dead then nothing will. This commanding salsa powerhouse makes it's point straight away: get up and dance NOW! It's a DJ's last resort, the secret weapon. Now, while all of the tracks on La 33's second album aren't the equivalent to a salsa defibrillator like "Descarga 33," they do share its drive, swing and vision: keep the party going. The Colombian band, led by bassist Sergio Mejia, made a big impact with their debut La 33 and they clearly decided to up the ante here. Listen to Juan David Fernandez's timbales roar on the explosive cumbia-salsa "Plinio Guzman." And the uptempo jazzy-mambo instrumental title track "Gozalo" shows that this band is made of real musicians who can play. But it's the tight-fisted straight-ahead salsa tracks like "La Rumba Buena" that define La 33 as the premium dance band that they are. Highly recommended.

The Meal Concept
People in Cambridge don’t have the choice of international cuisines when eating out, and ethnic ingredients and produce are not always easy to find locally for cooking at home. Interest in the foods, food history, and eating culture of other countries has grown exponentially despite this all this. What more accessible way is there to learn about a culture than how its people satisfy and glorify a basic human need? MenelikMusic offers people the opportunity to know the food and culture of the bands that perform at St Paul’s Centre. We believe this is ideal for country studies, and for enhancing a foodie's cultural knowledge. As from the 29th Feb, we will endeavour to regularly invite guest speakers/food historians specialising in the country or region's cuisine, to give us a brief talk prior to dancing our socks off.
