JOHN LYONS (Poet/Painter) 8:30pm

After many years of secret writing, John Lyons came into the spotlight by
winning the Peterloo Poetry Competition Afro-Caribbean/Asian Prize in
1987 and in that same year being commended in the Poetry Society’s
National Poetry Competition, and also taking the second prize in the
Cultureword competition. In 1988 his successes continued when he took
the joint second prize with Jackie Kay in the Peterloo Poetry prize; third
time lucky, in 1991 he was again outright winner with the poem,
‘Antoine’s Barber Shop’. 1991 brought him further success: he received an
Arts Council Literary Award. His commitment to education is well
established. He is ever enthusiastic about sharing his experience as a
writer, inspiring and encouraging aspiring poets. His work has also been
represented in numerous anthologies for both children and adults.
