Arnold Layne, See Emily Play and others

From late on Tuesday evening to mid morning on Wednesday, a team of technicians set up the sound and lighting systems for the "work in progress performance" of the "City Wakes" tribute to Syd Barrett. Wednesday morning 9 a.m. "You did all this last night?" "No, we haven't stopped." In other words they worked through the night after a pit stop for refuelling at the Six Bells.

And when the musicians arrived, they launched into their rendition of Barrett's "Arnold Layne" which  features in the evening performance. These photographs are from the rehearsal on the morning of the performance. Scroll down for photographs of the actual performance.

Wednesday 5 December 2007 at 6 p.m. : an introductory word  from Simon Gunton, musical director, a word from Rosemary Breen, Syd Barrett's sister, who said she could see the "shy smile" on her brother's face if he had known about this celebration of his life and work, and then a few more words from Simon before the band kicked off the evening with its rousing version of "Arnold Layne". For full listings and information about the project  please go to the City Wakes website which includes a detailed programme for this truly memorable evening.

...Over two months on and the magic of that night still lives inside me. The first tribute to Roger in in his hometown; it couldn't have been more delicate, intimate and precious! Beautifully fitting and in the true artistic spirit that was so much at the core of Roger's life. Thank you so, so very much!

I am looking forward to next October and counting the days!
